A rusty
pickup truck bumped along a dirt road. The driver glanced down at
the young woman who was sleeping in the seat next to him, then into
the back of the truck's cabin, where his brother lay sprawled out
over the seat, snoring loudly. They had only been on the road an
hour, but the flurry of activity over the last week had left him and
his companions exhausted. He and his friends had become an overnight
sensation as they regaled the reporters who had filled their small
town with the details of the tragic event they had witnessed. He was
glad to finally be getting away from the media spotlight.
Their
childhood friend, Patty, had seen them on the television and called
them up to tell them about the wedding. While the announcement had
caught them off guard, as she had only moved away a couple months
back with her current partner, it was a welcome excuse to flee the
bustle of their normally quiet town.
The
driver covered his mouth as he let out a loud yawn. The woman next
to him stirred in her seat, causing her blond hair to tumble down
over her face, but she remained asleep. He lead over and tucked the
errant strands behind her ear. He slowed the truck as it approached
a faded stop sign and turned onto the smooth, paved road. He knew
the turn well, as it signaled the last fifteen miles of their road
trip.
After a
few minutes of traveling down the road, he saw a building with a
large GAS sign on its roof. He pulled into the gas station and
parked the truck next to one of the pumps.
The
passengers exited the vehicle and the driver entered the building to
pay for the gas. The young woman followed him and grabbed the key.
“Hey
Buck, can you get me a root beer?” she asked as she unlocked the
door to the bathroom.
“Okay!”
he replied.
After a
few minutes, the other passenger banged on the door and shouted,
“Hurry up Shirley Sue! You've got a line out here.”
“Hold
your horses, Roger!” the muffled voice shouted back. The toilet
flushed and Shirley Sue exited the bathroom.
“It's
all yours,” she said.
After
everyone was ready, the party climbed back into the truck and hit the
road once more. As he drove, Buck thought about the wedding. He had
a feeling that this trip was going to be interesting.
